Designer Diaries: Chaymeriyia Moncrief

Can you tell us a little about yourself and what you do?

My names is Chaymeriyia Moncrief and i'm 20 years old. I design website, logos, digital art, print and learning development. I'm a self taught designer and I've been designing for a little over 6 years.

I'm a Jefferson Davis High School graduate from Alabama. I attended Alabama State University for Business Management and Marketing.

When did you discover your passion?

It started out as a basic hobby at 16. I started out making little graphics with shapes on Microsoft word and publisher for a class assignment in a computer class and kind of amazed myself with the little creative project.

I then started putting little graphics on T-shirts and making up logos using cliparts and cool fonts, with some good feedback on the graphics I began to really focus on how I can really utilize the hobby and become better at it.

I started researching graphic design, learning the basics, learning the Ai and as I dug deeper the more the hobby grew from a boredom escape to a passion.

Once learning Adobe Illustrator and how to make my own graphics & arts I feel in love with it and has been designing every since.

What made you turn your passion into a career choice versus just a hobby?

I think the idea of creating something so cool & different for people was rush for me, it was exciting. But over the years I have done design work for free for family and friends. Because honestly 6 years ago I didn't realize the Graphic Design was a serious career.

After seeing what I could do, and how I excited people with my work for their businesses or personal use. I knew I had to make this a career and put myself in the field for the long run.

How do you stay motivated?

My motivation come from everything around me. My office in particular keeps my creative juices flowing just by the random thing I have it.

Like car tags on the wall, a huge banner with my face illustrated on it and so on.

But most of all making my clients happy is truly a motivation for me to put my all into it.

...Oh and Coffee

Can you share a little about your design process?

My process usually starts of with meeting or speaking to the potential client and briefing on their design needs, digging into their business, understanding the client themselves and sketching layouts and making visual decisions.

I normally spend time researching the the industry and checking out their graphics and designs to determine how I can make my clients design stand out from the others.

I like to fully understand my client because I like to use my creativity and THEIR personalities to make the perfect designs.

Lastly, I get into the digital designing & production.

What is your favorite part about having a creative business?

Simply working with a client that allows me to have my way with the design process. (some clients like to have EVERY LITTLE SAY IN THE PROCESS)

What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced in your career and how have you overcome them?

I can't say what my biggest challenge has been as of yet. I have come to some disadvantages where I couldn't meet a clients need and have left them disappointed.

Overcoming them was me simply learning from the mistakes and utilizing it next time to not make that same mistake.

What advice would you give to aspiring designers looking to build a successful creative business?

Nothing more than to stay true to your craft, always be willing to learn, be different and NEVER worry about the next designer. AND HAVE PATIENCE, with some clients you're going to NEED it.

Whats next for your career?

As of now I am opening a Co-working space here in Alabama for Freelancers, graphic designers & start-ups called State of Creatives and I am finally bringing together a group of awesome people where we can take this Creative culture to the next level in our city.

I am also learning Web Development, CSS and so fourth, trying to collaborate my designing skills & development skills in one.
