Can you tell us a little about yourself and what you do?
I’m a graphic, GUI, surface and fashion designer from Nijmegen, the Netherlands with experience in designing brands, applications, touchscreens, websites, apps, textiles, patterns and clothing.
When did you discover your passion?
My interest in fashion and design increased through the years. I wanted to combine both fashion and graphic design so I started designing my own fabrics in 2012 and clothing in 2013.
What made you turn your passion into a career choice versus just a hobby?
After working as a graphic designer in a company for many years I wanted to make a change and started designing my own fabrics and clothing.
I have created an own brand identity called “Haakje Sluiten Design”, took part in surface pattern design courses and sewing classes to improve my skills and have created several items, mainly clothes for adults.
How do you stay motivated?
I’m a highly driven person. When I‘ve something on my mind I just need to make it happen. I also work in different design areas so I can switch easily between graphic design, interspersed with fashion and GUI design to keep me motivated at all times.
Can you share a little about your design process?
The design process depends on my design area. I’ll explain my fashion design process here, a process I always start with market research to gather information about the upcoming fashion trends and the creation of clothes samples. After I figured out what my focus will be I start designing and creating clothes for my clothing line.
What is your favorite part about having a creative business?
Creating designs that make people happy.
What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced in your career and how have you overcome them?
Gaining enough money to support my family and my business. By working hard, staying focused on my goals and with the help of my supportive husband I can make it happen.
What advice would you give to aspiring designers looking to build a successful creative business?
You have to put a lot of effort, such as time and work in running your own business. Stay focused and be patient. Always have a clear vision of what you want to achieve and by what time you want to accomplish that. Keep up with the latest market developments, needed skills and make sure to gain publicity so people know you’re out there.
What’s next for your career?
Further developing my design agency by expanding my clothing line and fabric designs as well as gaining more graphic and GUI assignments.
